Have? you read the? statement from the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association. They’re expressing more than concern at Google’s offer to buy the 700mhz wireless range at the next auction?? The CTIA’s statement doesn’t seem very? transparent. My first impression is that they support? data-restriction through government regulation.? Maybe it just comes across that way to me as I read Google’s requirement for open applications, open devices, open services and networks.? It also seems to me that they? want us to fear Google.

If Google’s intent is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and have advertisers pay the bills then more users would seem to lead to more money. If this effort manifests in part by brining more bandwidth to more users, then they’re truly leading an admirable battle. With more competitors, The Battle For The Bandwidth and the Net Neutrality debate will be healthy.

Pasted from CTIA’s press release.

“The veil has been lifted. Google’s letter to the FCC this morning highlights the Internet giant’s scheme to have the 700 MHz auction rigged with special conditions in its favor. If Google is willing to commit almost $5 billion dollars for spectrum that it wants encumbered with various requirements, then let it win that spectrum in a competitive auction and choose that business model. Google and its allies, with their collective market capitalization approaching half a trillion dollars, don’t need a government handout at taxpayers’ expense. The competitive wireless industry welcomes all new entrants, but no company should be able to buy a custom-fit government regulation that suits their particular business plan. Consumers should decide if they’re right, not the federal government”.?

?

Pasted from Eric Schmidt’s letter to the FCC:

“As you know, Google submitted an ex parte letter on July 9th explaining that, in order to promote genuine competition, the Commission must include open platforms as part of the applicable licensing requirements for paired commercial blocks in the Upper 700 MHz Band. In particular, our July 9th letter requested that the Commission should extend to all CMRS-type spectrum licensees clearly delineated, explicitly enforceable, and unwavering obligations to provide (1) open applications, (2) open devices, (3) open wholesale services, and (4) open network access.”

CNNMoney.com is reporting that the Webmaster is back and salaries are up. The online report also reflects that IT professionals with Project Management Skills is one of the hottest IT jobs in the U.S. To comment on this, I’m on the phone with Bill Cullifer, WOW Executive Director and the WhyITNow.org initiative.

Bill, can you tell us what’s changed from the slump of a few years ago?

“Brent, what’s changed is that business, industry and managers that hire Webmasters and IT Managers have an improved understanding of the skills required and the IT and Web applications that help drive their bottom line.”

That’s great Bill. Any suggestions for those looking to get jobs in this Space? ?

“Brent, my biggest concern with the surge in popularity is that the “get rich quick” training companies selling short term training options will come out of the woodwork again. I caution individuals to consider training programs that offer the incremental training to land you a job yet will lead you to defined degree level programs within IT that promote life long learning.”

Thank you Bill. We’re certainly in it for the long haul for our readers and listeners.

Yahoo! Go for Mobile 2.0 has been announced and like very other mobile application, it works on “some” phones.

The Barvarian State Library in Germany is offering up it’s books to Google for indexing. Thomas Rubin – Microsoft’s associate general counsel for copyright, trademark and trade secrets say’s the whole thing is wrong because they are using copyrighted work to sell ads. The whole idea sounds pretty kewl to me.

Friendster apparently agrees.? They just offered up some ad space to Google in an ad? partnership that excludes former partner, Yahoo! In semi-related news, Google just released their new Google Desktop 5.

Turkey has banned YouTube. Apparently, their government sucks.

According to comScore Networks, nearly 750 million people on the planet used the Internet in January. Only a few were in space.

Russia is attacking software piracy by attacking Microsoft. “We are constantly fighting against unlicensed use of software, but we need to fight not with the consumers but those who develop the software,” said Deputy Russian IT minister Dmitry Milovantsev.

Cisco has apparently purchased Five Across, Inc. a Social Networking company. It’ll be interesting to see? how John Chambers moves forward with the acquisition. CNET.com has a interesting take in their podcast.

The Feds are rethinking their decision last year to force certain voice over IP providers. The taxes forced on VOIP providers would require consumers to pay an extra couple of bucks every month. The money goes into the Universal Slush fund for something or other. The money is supposed to get spent on telephone service in rural and poor areas that probably already use VOIP to save on their long distance bills anyway.

According to a CNET report, PC retailers are seeing spikes in sales and they’re attributing them to the Vista release. There’s also a few patches you should know about for XP.
