Special Discount for WOW members to attend MAX 2009–$400 off full conference price

October 4–7
Los Angeles, California

For four unforgettable days this October, MAX 2009 will bring together thousands of designers, developers, and decision-makers to shape the future. Exchange ideas and build relationships with leading designers and developers, industry experts, and Adobe product teams. Choose from hundreds of sessions and labs presented by industry leaders and Adobe experts on best practices and emerging technologies. Join the inspiring conversations that unfold when thousands of the most innovative, creative minds gather in one place.

Here are a few of the ways that you and your organization will benefit by attending MAX:

· Break new ground — There’s no doubt that your organization’s future success and profitability will depend on its ability to create compelling applications, content, and video on screens of every size, across operating systems, accessible from anywhere at any time. At MAX, you’ll see how it’s already being done, and can figure out how to adapt your own organization’s approach to customer and market demands.

· Become more productive — MAX helps people work smarter and faster, starting right away. You’ll learn how to get to market faster through efficient design and development workflows that support iterative development. You’ll attend hands-on training sessions and learn from real-world case studies that cover everything from powering public-facing sites to driving intranets to creating engines for the next generation of rich Internet applications (RIAs).

· Upgrade our organization’s skills — The dedicated Develop track is packed with sessions that directly relate to the work you are doing now and the work you will need to do next. Plus, you can and choose the sessions that are most applicable to your organization. Sessions cover the technical challenges faced in architecting solutions, building applications, integrating with back-end systems and services, dealing with occasionally connected clients, collaborating in real time, and much more.

· Learn from the experts — All MAX sessions and labs are taught by the best of the best — the kind of people you don’t just run into every day. At the same time, they can share their years of experience regarding what works and what doesn’t. This year’s developer headliners include Ray Camden, former vice president of software development at Broadchoice; Ely Greenfield, Adobe developer and Flex expert; and Christophe Coenraets, senior technical evangelist at Adobe.

· Bring home best practices — MAX attendees come from organizations all over the world, from small businesses to Fortune 1000 companies and local nonprofits to large government agencies. Past attendees include Google, Sony, FedEx, and Disney, just to name a few. That means you’ll be able to exchange ideas and make one-on-one contact with people who have dealt with the same challenges your organization is facing and learn how they tackled those challenges. And when you leave, they’ll be a part of your organization’s extended network.

Learn more about Adobe MAX worldwide online.

Today’s podcast is in continuation of the media coverage of the SES conference that took place in San Jose, CA last week.

In an attempt to uncover the proverbial “golden nugget” for Web professionals, I placed a call for interview to a number of notable speakers and exhibitors participating. To that end, I connected up by telephone with Tim Musgrove PhD, founder and CEO of TextDigger.com.

In this interview, Dr. Musgrove shares a few insights on a session that he sat in on the entitled “Don’t call it a Come Back Semantic Technology and Search.” The panelist consisted of titans of industry such as Google, Bing, Ask, YeildBuild, Yahoo and RadarNetworks. Dana Todd the session moderator and the panelist talked about semantic recommendations that can increase site optimization and landing page rankings.

In this three minute interview, Dr. Musgrove addresses my request for a golden nugget by introducing a Semantic Technology product that he’s developed at TextDigger.com. It’s available today and according to independent research is been proven to work to improve rankings and search relevance. It’s also available now for a free download at TextDigger.com.

Dr. Musgrove has agreed to participate in future interviews where we will talk about the case studies that came out of the session, how the product works in depth and how Web professionals can benefit.

Check out the full three minute interview on today’s Web Pro Minute website.

More information on Semantic Technology

According to Wikipedia Semantic Technology is:

In software, semantic technology encodes meanings separately from data and content files, and separately from application code.

This enables machines as well as people to understand, share and reason with them at execution time. With semantic technologies, adding, changing and implementing new relationships or interconnecting programs in a different way can be just as simple as changing the external model that these programs share.

With traditional information technology, on the other hand, meanings and relationships must be predefined and “hard wired” into data formats and the application program code at design time. This means that when something changes, previously unexchanged information needs to be exchanged, or two programs need to interoperate in a new way, the humans must get involved.

Off-line, the parties must define and communicate between them the knowledge needed to make the change, and then recode the data structures and program logic to accommodate it, and then apply these changes to the database and the application. Then, and only then, can they implement the changes.

Semantic technologies are “meaning-centered.” They include tools for:

    * autorecognition of topics and concepts,
* information and meaning extraction, and
* categorization.

Given a question, semantic technologies can directly search topics, concepts, associations that span a vast number of sources.

Semantic technologies provide an abstraction layer above existing IT technologies that enables bridging and interconnection of data, content, and processes.

<itunes:summary>Today’s podcast is in continuation of the media coverage of the SES conference that took place in San Jose, CA last week.
A Full Transcript of this podcast will be available in seventy two hours.
    * autorecognition of topics and concepts,
    * information and meaning extraction, and
    * categorization.
Given a question, semantic technologies can directly search topics, concepts, associations that span a vast number of sources.
Semantic technologies provide an abstraction layer above existing IT technologies that enables bridging and interconnection of data, content, and processes. Second, from the portal perspective, semantic technologies can be thought of as a new level of depth that provides far more intelligent, capable, relevant, and responsive interaction than with information technologies alone.

For today’s podcast, I reached out to Rebecca Lieb, editor, consultant, speaker, and VP, North America Econsultancy. Rebecca Lieb is a very well respected Search professional and has spent this week at the SES conference in San Jose, CA. I asked Rebecca to share a “golden nugget” or two regarding the goings on at the conference as it relates to the future of search.

Rebecca sat in on a session conversation with Nicholas Fox, business product management director for Google AdWords. Our conversation regarded Google’s potential shift from its current ad model to very different model that could negatively impact the future of search.

Rebecca quotes Fox as saying that the future of search might be a lot less about keywords as well as a lot less about advertisers creating their own ads. “Keywords have been the heart and soul of not only organic search optimization but also as well as paid advertising” according Rebecca.

Fox also discussed the potential of introducing a new pricing model and that Google was looking at a Cost per Acquisition model (CPA) performance model rather than the classic CPC or auction model that Web professionals and advertisers are used to today.

Rebecca heard a lot of skepticism from marketers about the potential of Google doing all of the heavy lifting coming from marketers attending the SES conference.

I’m sure you’ve heard the news that Microsoft has launched its new BING search engine. For today’s podcast, I’d like to cover a few of the highlights and connect you up with a couple or pertinent links you and a short promotional video of the features and benefits according to the source.

If you have checked out the Bing, you may notice have noticed different search results from MSN search results and Bing. Although search results are small by comparison to others (5-10 market share) is significant enough to warrant your attention. Clearly, Microsoft will have an uphill battle competing with the 800 hundred pound Google guerilla. That said it’s definitely worth your time to investigate and to resummit your sites and those of your closest customers. :

Bing is marketing itself as a core provider of the following core search categories:

•Shopping
•Health
•Local
•Travel

Although not as robust as Google’s Webmaster resources, Bing does offer some limited information for Web Professionals. Check out the links and all of the great resources on today’s Web professional minute.

Greetings WOW Members and Web Professionals everywhere!

I sat in on the workshop entitled, “Search Engine Marketing: How It Works, How to Do It Well & What It Means for Designers” at Web Design World Boston last week. The speakers and producers of the three hour workshop were, Lance Loveday, CEO, Closed Loop Marketing and Amy Konefal, Director of Search Marketing, Closed Loop Marketing.

According to the session description, Pay-per-click search engine marketing now accounts for almost half of all online advertising dollars, equating to over $15.5 billion dollars spent on search engine marketing in 2008. Expectations are that this figure will double within the next four years. The growth in the online marketing arena over the past decade has created a huge demand for people who know how to run Search Engine Marketing (SEM) campaigns and run them well. What does this mean for designers? While the need for people who know SEM is great, the need for people who know SEM and how to design and build web sites is even greater. Attain a strong skill set in both design and SEM, and you’ll find yourself in a highly marketable position as a professional.

For today’s podcast, I asked Lance Loveday, CEO, Closed Loop Marketing to summarize the session and to provide us with additional insights and links for additional resources.

For today?’s podcast, I am on the phone with Rebecca Lieb, Advisor to the the ClickZ Network, Author and Consultant. Rebecca recently moderated a conference panel on the topic of “The Next Wave For Online Video”. In this interview, Rebecca shares her tips on how to navigate the new wave of online video, as more people are watching, sharing, and finding videos online. Rebecca also discusses the issues with video search, and the industry’s desire for standards on how to tag, organize, and find videos and a look ahead into the future of online video search as well.

Transcript Interview on Video Search with Rebecca Lieb and Bill Cullifer

BILL CULLIFER: Greetings WOW members and Web professionals everywhere. Bill Cullifer here with the World Organization of Webmasters (WOW) and the WOW Technology Minute. Today?’s podcast is a continuation on the topic of Search. I?’m pleased to be on the phone interviewing Rebecca Lieb, and advisor for the ClickZ Network, an author and a consultant and often sought-after speaker and moderator for a variety of conferences. She just participated in the SES Conference in San Jose where she moderated a panel on “The Next Wave for Online Video,” a session that provided tips on how to navigate the new wave of online video and also best practices and standards on how to tag, organize and find videos.

Rebecca, can you summarize that session for us?

REBECCA LIEB: Absolutely. There are a couple of different elements to video search. I think the predominant issue today, and we can talk about the next wave stuff in a minute, is that search engines are like what search engine optimizers are fond of calling big, dumb, ugly pages. Search engines still understand text on a page better than they understand video or video content. They can?’t do voice or text recognition, so if I?’m talking to you in this podcast search engines don?’t know what I?’m saying or what you?’re saying. They don?’t recognize the images in a video.

So when you?’re optimizing video for search what?’s really important is the title of the video, the meta data surrounding the video file that describes a little bit about what?’s in the video and then some accompanying elements on the page. It?’s always a good idea to have thumbnails, for example, of video, so that people get that immediate sense and are encouraged to click through to the video file.

But in terms of actually searching for and finding video, words are the most important thing there is. So if you were to, say if this were a videocast rather than a podcast, you would want to put my name in, you would want to put your name in and you?’d want to put in plenty of descriptive text about what we?’re discussing, how to optimize video for search. We?’re talking about the meta data in the video file itself, which the search engines can read. We?’re talking about the title of the video. But search engines are also very good at figuring out content in adjacency. So what?’s also important is the text that you would have on the webpage surrounding the invitation to click through and view a video. So more description, more elucidation of what?’s in the video and what the viewer can expect.

Now if you really want to make a video findable, and if the video contains a lot of dialogue, say it?’s an interview like this or it?’s a news clip, like let?’s say Sarah Palin and Katie Couric, you can also include a transcript of the text that?’s being discussed in the video. That makes things eminently searchable. Transcription makes the video much more searchable and much more findable.

There are projects in development that are pretty next wave and cool. For example, facial recognition technology. So one day in the future, theoretically, you can search for videos of somebody like Brittany Spears, and even if that video isn?’t tagged “Brittany Spears” in any text-based format, the search engines are supposed to recognize and shoot you over to Brittany Spears videos based on picking Brittany out of the face in the crowd.

I think video search has actually been lurking in the background for longer than people who work for solely on the Web think. I think it was five or six years ago that PBS commissioned a survey to figure out how people search program guides, for example, on various digital television platforms and interactive television platforms. You can think of the multi-channel television universe as a corollary. How do you search through literally thousands of programs? For people who are listening who have TiVo they might be familiar with some of these interfaces. Searching for programming, movies that star Harrison Ford for example, that?’s search.

My best advice for today and the foreseeable future is tag and transcribe and describe as much as possible in lame, dumb, ugly, old-fashioned text.

BILL: Anything else that also took place at Search that might give the listeners an understanding of trends in the search world these days?

REBECCA: I think a major trend, perhaps the major trend in search right now that affects video as well as a lot of other multimedia on the Web is universal search. The three major search engines, Google, Yahoo and MSN have begun including in the search results new search, video search, book search. So this makes tagging video all the more important because you?’ve actually got a shot now, which you didn?’t have a year ago, of showing up on Google?’s homepage if you?’ve got a video hosted on YouTube, or even hosted on your website, that?’s relevant to a searcher?’s query.

BILL: Wow, very relevant. I appreciate that.

Today?’s podcast is a continuation on the topic of Search. In previous podcast, we?’ve uncovered some of the best practices for listing your content in the search engines and a host of other search topics around the globe. For today?’s podcast, I’m focusing in on the topic of delisting your url from Google and other such notable search results. As odd as that might sound, its a question that’s often asked. To assist us in better understanding the ‘how to” from a Google perspective, I have a short video of Matt Cutts, Search Quality group at Google.
