ICANN says .XXX still a no-go and Google Health Search

Posted by Fred on March 30, 2007
Web Pro News / Comments Off

ICANN again rejected .xxx as a domain extension. There’s strong arguments for and against. Vint Cerf is in charge so it’s probably going to be ok. Two board members did disagree with the board’s decision.

Yahoo! will be appointing a “Traffic Quality Advocate”? as a result of a recent Click Fraud ruling in a San Jose Federal Court. Thousands of advertisers? will get a dedicated? Traffic Quality Advocate? and? a brand new Traffic Quality Resource Center. According to WebProNews, “Yahoo has estimated that, on average, it filters out anywhere from 12 to 15 percent of clicks due to fraud.”

Google is refocusing on Health Search and they have a? new tool for Do It Yourself advertisers called Dynamic Keyword Insertion. Google also answers a few Pay Per Action questions at their Inside Adwords blog.

Deepfish is a prototype browser from Microsoft that runs on Windows Mobile. The phone browser war escalates.

Apple Releases Boot Camp for Vista FOIA Audit and SitePoint Articles

Posted by Fred on March 29, 2007
Web Design, Web Government / Comments Off

Apple has released a Boot Camp beta for Vista. iTunes reportedly still isn’t Vista-ready.

According to? Eric J. Sinrod? at News.com, “A recent audit by the National Security Archive? –an independent, nongovernmental research effort at George Washington University–paints a bleak picture of governmental noncompliance with E-Freedom of Information Act? a decade after its enactment.”? ?

They’ve probably lost most of the information. Having the government? manage their own information just sounds like trouble. What are they doing with information anyway. Just kidding, please don’t audit me.

There are two great? web marketing articles over at sitepoint.com. One titled, “Gear Up Your Site for Social Media Marketing“? is very timely and the other “The Essential 2007 Code Optimization Tutorial for SEO” is awesome for you slackers out there that need to catch up in a few minutes.

Which is longer than we have.

Yahoo! Mail Unlimited Storage Google Mobile Flight Info and Dell Linux

Posted by Fred on March 27, 2007
Web Business / Comments Off

Yahoo! Mail is now offering unlimited storage. Competition is good. Maybe Google and Microsoft will step it up too.

Here’s a new Google mobile feature you might not have heard about, text your flight number to Google at 466453 and Google will return your flight information. Now that’s nice. Especially since they just signed a deal with LG to put Google Mobile on millions of phones.

WebProNews reports MySpace revenue? at about 30 million per month according to? one analyst. Rupert Murdoch purchased MySpace in 2005 for 580 million. Revenue is expected to double next year.

Also according to WebProNews, “Shoppers looking to purchase Dell PCs and notebooks will now have a choice between Windows Vista and Linux-based operating systems for their new machines.”

Web Business / Comments Off

First, a quick reminder that Adobe is announcing the launch of their new creative suite tomorrow, that’s our Tuesday for those of you in a? far away time zone. This is the first major launch since acquiring Macromedia and subsequently some of my favorite tools. Let’s hope the integrations? went silky-smooth.

So I have a question for you. What do longjump, Proto, Teqlo, Calgoo, Tungle, System One, blogtronics, Cogenz and Stikkit have in common? They’re all companies you’ve probably never heard of. They’re also companies you may want to learn about since they’re all about the current state of the Internet and each are carving out a product or service niche you may also have never thought of.

Things are changing out there folks and it’s time you dig back in and learn something new. Not because any of these companies will become Google or Microsoft. You need to learn about these companies to stay informed on the latest trends so you don’t make a stupid mistake or recommendation at your job that will cost you or your company money.

The links to the companies are here at wowtechminute.com. It’s time to look.

SiteProNews.com has all the things you should look out for when switching domains. You’ll want to bookmark this one.

Robert McLaws reports on software to cut the commercials out of your Recorded TV in Vista.

The Google Webmaster Blog has some solid advice on? ”Site content and use of web catalogues” with specific advice? for not hiring? the wrong seo consultant. The post is valuable because it ties together real world practices with questionable? ethics. If you’re the black hat seo type you’ll definitely want to ignore this one.

Lynda.com has some great videos posted of Mike Chambers giving an intro and complete overview of Adobe’s new? Apollo development tool.

Google Buys Adscape and Trendalyzer and Adobe Releases Apollo Alpha

Posted by Fred on March 19, 2007
Web Design, Web Development / Comments Off

Google is buying Adscape. Inserting ads into games is apparently the idea behind the purchase. The terms were not released however, Google did say they have already been in talks with game developers for some time. Google also purchased Gapminder’s Trendalyzer software. Trendalyzer animates various data points and is said to “create novel effects” out of statistical analysis. It sounds to me? like Google Analytics is going to take longer to load.

Adobe has officially released Apollo and as Michael Arrington at TechCrunch points out, this could create entirely new classes of companies. Apollo lets it’s users create content that is cross-operating system, cross-browser and desktop ready.? This means that? the Rich Internet Apps you build? for the? Apollo runtime will run on the desktop apart from the browser and vice-versa.? Also think in terms of? occasionally-connected applications that can be built from HTML, Flash, Flex and AJAX.

Google Webmaster Tools Exposes Key Phrases in Anchor Text

Posted by Fred on March 16, 2007
Web Pro News / Comments Off

Vanessa Fox over at the Google Webmaster Blog has a new post about an? enhancement to the Google Webmaster Tools. If it’s your job to make sure your site gets traffic, you’re aware of Google’s Webmaster Tools. These tools expose a lot of data about the way Google “sees” or? indexes your website.

For a while we’ve been able to check out the keywords other sites use in their links or anchor text? when they point to our sites. Now you can get the complete key phrases used in? the anchor text. This is important for web marketers. Especially if you want to see how various keywords are grouped together by other webmasters or bloggers? linking to your site.

So there you have it,? some low-hanging fruit in your search engine marketing to-do list? for next week. Have a great weekend and don’t drink and drive over this lucky? St. Patrick’s Day weekend. Be careful if you decide to drink and walk.

From Aloha Workshops where it’s green all the time, this is Brent Norris for the World Organization of Webmasters and the Wow Technology Minute.
